Why Summer Can Make Acne Worse

A lot of people expect their skin to improve in summer. There’s usually more sunshine, more time outdoors, and often less stress than during the colder months.

But in my experience, summer can actually be a huge trigger for breakouts, especially for acne prone or sensitive skin.

I see it every year in clinic. Clients who had fairly settled skin suddenly start noticing more congestion, small bumps, inflamed breakouts or irritation once the weather gets warmer.

And usually, it’s not just one thing causing it. It’s a combination of heat, sweat, SPF, increased oil production, chlorine, dehydration and barrier disruption all happening at once.

The good news is that you absolutely do not need to avoid the sun or become obsessive about your skin over summer! Usually, a few small adjustments make a huge difference.

How Sweat Can Trigger Breakouts

Sweating itself is not bad for the skin. The problem is what happens when sweat sits on the skin for long periods, especially when it mixes with oil, bacteria, SPF and friction from hats, clothing or exercise.

This can create the perfect environment for congestion and inflammation, particularly around the:

  • forehead

  • hairline

  • chest

  • back

  • jawline

I also see this a lot in people who are working out more during summer or spending long periods outdoors in the heat.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to aggressively scrub the skin afterwards, which usually leaves the skin barrier irritated and even more reactive.

Why SPF Is Essential for Acne Prone Skin

This is something I speak about constantly with clients because there’s still a huge misconception that SPF causes acne.

Some SPFs absolutely can clog the skin, particularly heavier formulas that aren’t suited to acne prone skin, but avoiding SPF altogether usually creates much bigger problems.

UV exposure increases inflammation in the skin, weakens the skin barrier and can worsen post-inflammatory pigmentation left behind from acne.

And if you’re using active skincare ingredients like exfoliating acids or retinoids, your skin is already more vulnerable to sun damage and you absolutely must pair them with a good quality SPF.

The key is finding an SPF that works for your skin type and reapplying it properly throughout the day, especially if you’re sweating, swimming or spending long periods outdoors.

I will always recommend Heliocare products to my clients, they have such a large range of products suited to all skin types. For acne prone clients I would recommend their Oil Free Gel, which can either be tinted or not.

Why Chlorine and Pool Water Can Upset Acne Prone Skin

This is another big one during summer for those of us who love a swim!

Chlorine can leave the skin feeling tight, dry and irritated, especially if your barrier is already compromised from acne treatments or active skincare.

When the skin becomes dehydrated, it often tries to compensate by producing more oil, which can then lead to congestion and breakouts.

In my experience, one of the best things you can do after swimming is rinse the skin as soon as possible and replenish hydration rather than letting chlorine sit on the skin for hours.

Simple habits really do make a difference.

Refreshing Acne Prone Skin During Summer Without Over Cleansing

One of the biggest struggles during summer is feeling like your skin constantly needs cleansing. Between sweat, SPF, heat and being outdoors more, many people end up overwashing their skin which can leave the barrier irritated and reactive.

This is one of the reasons I love HYPO21 during summer, especially for acne prone skin.

It’s a hypochlorous acid spray, which is a substance our bodies naturally produce as part of the immune response. In skincare, it’s known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which means it’s brilliant for refreshing the skin throughout the day - particularly after sweating, workouts, travelling, pool days or being out in the heat.

I often recommend it to clients because it helps support the skin without stripping it or disrupting the barrier.

A lot of my acne prone clients absolutely swear by it during summer as an easy way to keep skin feeling calmer, fresher and less congested during hot weather.

How to Support Acne Prone Skin During Summer

In my experience, summer skin does best when we keep things simple and supportive.

That usually means:

  • cleansing sweat off gently rather than scrubbing

  • keeping the skin hydrated

  • reapplying SPF properly

  • avoiding over exfoliation

  • showering after workouts where possible

  • supporting the skin barrier rather than stripping it

And internally, don’t forget the basics still matter: sleep, hydration, blood sugar balance and stress all continue to affect the skin during summer too.

Professional Acne Support During Summer at MW Skin Studio

Summer can actually be a really good time to reset your skin with the right guidance.

For clients struggling with congestion, inflammation or recurring breakouts during warmer weather, I often recommend treatments and skincare routines that focus on calming the skin barrier, supporting hydration and keeping pores clear without overwhelming the skin.

Through both in-clinic and virtual consultations, I help clients understand what their skin actually needs rather than simply throwing more products at it.
